Amazing Things are Happening Here

when i walk to work, i have to see this huge-ass banner that hangs over a glass bridge that spans between the hospital and the clinics that are associated with it. it says "AMAZING THINGS ARE HAPPENING HERE."

and they sometimes are. like last year there was a girl with cancer all in her organs, and they removed it all and she is still alive (even if she needs a billion shots and medications for the rest of her life). lots of cutting edge experiments and procedures are done at NYP all the time. today the NY Times told me that Bill Clinton is back in the hospital for some chest pain, and it makes me oddly excited knowing that he is one of the patients at the hospital i work at.

so being a part of this big network that does amazing shit on a frequent basis is exciting. i just have a hard time reconciling that with the crazies that show up on my floor with an equally frequent basis. the guy who was so drunk off his ass that he needed to be tied down, only to wriggle out of his restraints and now his family is trying to sue us? the drug addict who also has bipolar disorder, but boxes in his free time (that one was actually nice. he saved my license by reminding me to take out his IV before i discharged him)? the 350 pound asthmatic who asks for cheese with his food? the old chinese man who was so confused that he stole his roommate's walker and tried to take a dump in the corner of the room that he thought was the bathroom?

what creeps me out the most is that a lot of these people live in my neighborhood. when they tell me they're going to walk home from the hospital upon discharge, i always make a mental note to never discuss where i live even in casual conversation. those kinds of amazing things are most certainly NOT happening here.
